All About Dental Implant Restoration

If you’re missing any of your permanent teeth, you’re not the only one. In fact, according to the American College of Prosthodontics, 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth.

Tooth loss can happen for a myriad of reasons, but some of the more common causes include tooth decay, gum disease, and dental trauma. Since tooth loss is such a widespread issue, there are quite a few treatment options for replacing those missing teeth.

One tooth replacement option that has quickly gained popularity is dental implant restoration. More and more people are choosing this treatment over traditional choices like bridges and dentures due to its long list of benefits that far surpass other options.

At Avalon Dental in San Ramon, California, Dr. Cliff Broschinsky leads our team in offering dental implant restoration to replace missing teeth, boost your oral health, and restore your beautiful smile.

In this blog, we discuss everything you need to know about this innovative treatment.

Understanding dental implant restoration

A dental implant consists of a titanium post, an abutment, and an artificial crown. First, we place the titanium post in your jawbone. Then we place a custom-fitted and color-matched crown on top, attached with the abutment.

Eventually, the post fuses with your jawbone, making it a long-term, or even permanent, solution to tooth loss.

To be considered a candidate for dental implant restoration, you need to have:

If you don’t meet these criteria, you may still be able to get implants, but you may have to undergo some other procedures first.

Preparing for dental implant restoration

The dental implant restoration process begins with a consultation. Dr. Broschinsky sits down with you to discuss your goals and performs a thorough dental exam to gauge your oral health.

He can then customize a treatment plan that’s tailored to your oral health needs, your aesthetic goals, how many teeth you’re missing, the location of the missing teeth, and the quality and quantity of your jawbone.

If you have some oral health issues, such as cavities, tooth decay, or gum disease, Dr. Broschinsky needs to treat those first before moving on to tooth replacement.

Other procedures, such as a sinus lift or ridge modification, might be necessary if you don’t have enough jawbone to anchor the implants to.

Undergoing dental implant restoration

Once Dr. Broschinsky gives you the green light for dental implants, you can schedule the first step of the restoration process. That first step is implanting the titanium posts. This requires its own visit, because the posts need to fuse and your jaw needs to heal before Dr. Broschinsky puts the crown on top.

After that recovery period, he places your custom-made crown on top of the post, and your new smile is then ready to show off to the world.

Caring for dental implants

Dental implants work just like your natural teeth, meaning you can enjoy full speech and chewing function. They also stay in place, which eliminates the need for messy applications and any worry about the appliance clicking or slipping out of place.

To enjoy these benefits in the long term and make your tooth replacements last a lifetime, you need to care for them just like your natural teeth. Brush and floss them and see our team for regular cleanings and checkups.
