The Gift of a Healthy Smile: Cosmetic Dentistry Options for the New Year

If tooth decay, breakage, gum disease, or missing teeth have affected the look and function of your smile, you might be looking into cosmetic dentistry.

Cosmetic dentistry services can address multiple aspects of your smile, restoring beauty to your teeth and gums and boosting your self-confidence as a result.

While some cosmetic dentistry options focus purely on aesthetics, others can restore your oral health while delivering beautiful results.

The gift of a beautiful and healthy smile is one of the best things you can give yourself for the start of a new year. And at Avalon Dental, our cosmetic dentistry team, led by Dr. Cliff Broschinsky, certainly agrees.

In this month’s blog, we highlight three of our cosmetic dentistry options that can help you achieve your smile goals and promote optimal oral health in the coming year.

Dental bonding

When your teeth have suffered the effects of minor decay or trauma, they may have small chips, cracks, or worn-down edges. Not only does it affect the look of your smile, but also its health. Chips and cracks can become larger and allow room for bacteria if not addressed.

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that uses a composite resin to fill in chips or cracks. The tooth-colored dental material can also give unevenly shaped teeth a more symmetrical appearance.

During dental bonding, Dr. Broschinsky applies the resin and then cures it with a high-intensity light. This is a fast treatment that doesn’t require downtime and offers beautiful results.

Dental crowns

If you have a tooth that’s suffered significant damage due to decay or trauma, we may recommend a dental crown to address it. A dental crown is a tooth-colored cap that we place over a tooth to protect it from harmful bacteria and continued damage.

When your tooth needs a crown, Dr. Broschinsky begins by examining the tooth and determining what type of crown you need, whether it’s metal or porcelain. He then numbs the area and preps your tooth to be fitted for the crown. Next, he takes an impression of the targeted tooth for the creation of your custom-made crown.

He fits you for a temporary one to keep your tooth protected while the lab creates your permanent crown.

Dental implants

When you’ve lost one or more of your permanent teeth, replacing them with dental implants not only restores your smile’s beauty but its function as well.

Dental implants consist of titanium posts and artificial crowns. The post anchors into your jawbone to act like a new tooth root. Once the post has fused with your jawbone, Dr. Broschinsky places the custom crown on top.

Since the implant anchors into your jawbone so securely, it acts like a natural tooth, ensuring you maintain optimal speech and chewing function while eliminating the risk of jawbone loss.

The dental implant process requires multiple appointments over the course of several months, but the long-term results are well worth the investment of your time.

Invisalign®

When your teeth are crooked, overcrowded, or gapped and your jaw is misaligned, you’re at a higher risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Because of this, undergoing orthodontic treatment is important to protect the long-term health of your teeth and gums.

At Avalon Dental, we offer Invisalign, a brand of clear aligners that straighten your teeth and jaw. Over the course of several months, you wear a series of thermoplastic trays that apply pressure to your teeth to gently move them into position.

As long as you wear the aligners as instructed, you should have a beautifully straightened smile within a year of starting treatment.
