Anxious at the Dentist? How We Help — Without Pressure

Dental anxiety is far more common than most people assume, and it is rarely about pain. Much more often it is about not knowing what is coming, not feeling in control, and a memory of being rushed. Those are all things a dental practice can actually do something about.

What we do differently for anxious patients

Tell us you are nervous when you book, and we schedule accordingly — a longer appointment, at a quieter time of day. Nothing then happens without being explained first. You will hear what we are about to do before we do it, every time, and you can stop us at any point by raising a hand. We always stop, which is what makes people stop needing to ask.

Nitrous oxide, if you want it

We offer nitrous oxide — often called laughing gas. It takes the edge off within a few minutes, keeps you awake and able to talk to us, and wears off before you drive home. For most anxious patients it is more than enough.

We do not offer IV or oral sedation here. If your anxiety is severe enough that you genuinely need it, we will tell you so honestly and refer you to a practice that provides it, rather than talking you into something we are not set up for.

What actually helps most

In our experience it is not the medication. It is time, and being told the truth. A longer appointment, an unhurried pace, your own images on the screen so nothing is mysterious, and a straight answer when you ask whether something really needs doing.

Many of our patients came to us after years of avoiding dental care entirely. Nobody here is going to ask why it has been so long, or lecture you about it. We will work out where things stand and build a plan you can actually get through, in whatever order suits you.

If it has been a while and the thought of booking makes your stomach turn, call us and say exactly that. It is the most common phone call we take.
