Composite Bonding · San Ramon

The small cosmetic fix people underestimate

One visit, no anesthetic in most cases, and almost none of your own tooth removed. It solves more than people expect.

Who this is for

  • A chipped front tooth you notice in every photograph
  • A small gap you would rather close without orthodontics
  • Edges that have worn unevenly over the years
  • You are considering veneers and want to try something reversible first

Why we usually suggest this before veneers

Bonding is tooth-colored composite shaped directly onto your tooth and hardened with a light. It takes one appointment, it costs a fraction of porcelain, and — the part that matters most — it usually removes little or no enamel.

That last point is the whole argument. Once a tooth is prepared for a veneer, it needs a veneer or a crown for the rest of your life. Bonding leaves that door open. If you decide in five years that you want porcelain, nothing has been lost.

So when someone comes in asking about veneers for a single chipped tooth, we will nearly always show them what bonding would do first.

What it will and will not do

It handles chips, small gaps, worn edges, and reshaping a tooth that sits slightly out of proportion with its neighbors. On those it is excellent and almost undetectable.

It is less suited to changing the color of a whole smile, to teeth that need substantial shape changes, or to anywhere it will take heavy biting force. Composite is softer than porcelain — it chips more easily and it stains over time in a way porcelain does not.

If you drink a lot of coffee or red wine, expect the bonded area to need polishing every couple of years, and refreshing every five to eight.

Getting the shape right

Bonding is done freehand, which makes it more dependent on the dentist's eye than almost anything else in cosmetic dentistry. There is no laboratory involved and no second chance to check a model.

So we work slowly, in natural light, and we hand you a mirror before the final polish rather than after. If the shape is not right, it is far easier to adjust while the composite is still being shaped.

What to expect

Here’s how the visit actually goes.

No surprises. That’s the whole idea.

  1. 01

    Talking first

We look at what specifically bothers you. Often it is one edge, not the whole tooth — and knowing that changes the plan.

  2. 02

    Usually no injection

Most bonding needs no anesthetic because we are adding material rather than drilling. We will numb you if the area is sensitive.

  3. 03

    Shaping

Composite is layered on, shaped, and hardened. You will see it take form as we go.

  4. 04

    Your look in the mirror

Before the final polish, not after. Say if something is not right — that is what this step is for.

  5. 05

    Polishing

The last stage, and the one that decides whether it catches the light like enamel or looks flat.

Questions

Answered before you ask.

How long does bonding last?

Five to eight years typically, longer on a low-stress area. It can chip, and it stains gradually. Both are repairable without starting over, which is part of the appeal.

Will it match my teeth?

We shade-match in natural light before starting. The one thing to know is that bonding will not whiten later — so if you are planning to whiten, do that first and we will match to the new shade.

Does it damage the tooth underneath?

No. In most cases we lightly etch the enamel so the composite adheres, which is superficial. That is the main reason we prefer it as a first step.

Can bonding fix crooked teeth?

It can disguise mild irregularity by reshaping edges. It cannot move teeth — if the position genuinely needs changing, aligners are the honest answer and we will say so.
