Dental Anxiety · San Ramon
If it has been years, you are not the first
Nobody here is going to ask why it has been so long, or make a face at what they find.

However nervous you are, there is a way in
Three different starting points, depending on where you are. None of them commits you to treatment.
Who this is for
- It has been years and the longer it goes the harder it gets
- A bad experience somewhere else that you have not forgotten
- You are fine until the sound starts
- You have canceled a dental appointment more than once
What we have learned actually helps
Very few anxious patients are afraid of pain in the abstract. They are afraid of not knowing what is happening, of not being able to stop it, and of being judged for the state of their mouth. All three of those are things a practice controls entirely.
So: we tell you what we are about to do before we do it, every time, including the parts that seem too small to mention. You can stop us at any point by raising a hand, and we always stop — which is precisely what makes people stop needing to.
And we genuinely do not care why it has been a while. We have heard every version of it, none of them surprise us, and the reaction you are bracing for is not coming.
The first visit can be nothing at all
If it helps, book a first appointment where nothing clinical happens. You sit in the chair, we talk, you look at the room, and you leave. No examination, no instruments, no plan.
That sounds like a waste of an appointment. It is one of the most useful ones we offer, and a surprising number of long-term patients started with exactly that.
When you are ready, we go at whatever pace works — shorter appointments, one thing at a time, first slot of the morning so there is no waiting-room time to sit with it.
Nitrous oxide, and what we do not offer
We offer nitrous oxide — laughing gas. It takes the edge off within a few minutes, you stay awake and in control throughout, and it clears from your system by the end of the appointment so you can drive yourself home.
We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia. Where someone genuinely needs that level of sedation, it belongs with a practitioner set up and licensed specifically for it, and we will refer you rather than improvise.
For most anxious patients, though, what changes things is not sedation. It is a longer appointment, a slower pace, and someone explaining each step before it happens.
What to expect
Here’s how the visit actually goes.
No surprises. That’s the whole idea.
01
Tell us when you book
Say you are nervous. It changes the appointment length we schedule and who you see, before you arrive.
02
Talking first, sitting up
We start with a conversation with you upright, not reclined with someone standing over you.
03
Your signal
Raise a hand and we stop. Agreed before anything starts, and honored every time.
04
As much or as little as you want to know
Some patients want every detail. Some want none and would rather we just say when it is done. Both are fine — tell us which.
05
Technology that removes the worst parts
The digital scanner replaces the impression tray that makes people gag. The laser means less soreness afterwards. And seeing your own images on the screen takes away the not-knowing, which is usually the hardest part.
06
Small steps
We would rather do four short comfortable visits than one long one you dread.
Questions
Answered before you ask.
Will you judge me for the state of my teeth?
No. This is the single most common worry and it is the one we can most easily put to rest. We are interested in where things are now and what to do next, not in how they got there.
Do you offer sedation?
We offer nitrous oxide, which takes the edge off and wears off before you drive home. We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia — where that is genuinely needed, we refer to a practitioner licensed for it.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, absolutely. Plenty of patients do, and there is room for them in the treatment room if that helps.
What if I panic partway through?
Then we stop, you sit up, and we take as long as you need. Nothing is so urgent that it cannot wait ten minutes or be rebooked. That is not a failure — it is the arrangement working as intended.
