Do not fix it at home
The single most common way a repairable denture becomes an unrepairable one is superglue.
Who this is for
- A denture that has cracked or broken in half
- A tooth that has come away from the base
- A denture that has become loose over the years
- Sore spots that keep returning after adjustment
If it has broken, bring the pieces
Bring every fragment, however small, and do not glue anything. Household adhesives are not designed for acrylic, they are not food-safe, and — most importantly — the residue contaminates the fracture surfaces so a laboratory can no longer bond them properly.
A clean break with both pieces intact is often a same-day or next-day repair for a modest fee. The same break after a superglue attempt frequently means a remake at ten times the cost. This is far and away the most common avoidable expense we see with dentures.
A denture that has broken cleanly down the middle usually broke because it no longer fits — the fit has changed, the denture flexes with every bite, and eventually acrylic fatigues. So we look at why, not just at the crack.
What a reline actually is
Your jawbone changes shape for the rest of your life once teeth are gone. It resorbs — slowly, continuously, and faster in the first year after extractions. A denture made to fit the ridge you had in 2019 is sitting on a different ridge now.
A reline resurfaces the fitting side of the existing denture to match the ridge as it is today. The teeth and the shape you are used to stay exactly the same; only the tissue-facing surface is renewed.
It restores the seal and stops the movement, and it costs a fraction of a new denture. Most people need one every few years and a great many go far too long, putting up with looseness and sore spots because they assume the alternative is a remake.
When a remake is genuinely the answer
When the acrylic has been repaired several times already and is structurally compromised. When the teeth have worn flat enough that the bite has collapsed and your face has lost height. When the fit has changed so much that a reline would leave an unmanageable thickness.
We will tell you which of those applies rather than defaulting to the more expensive option. Plenty of dentures that patients arrive expecting to replace need a reline and an afternoon.
What to expect
Here’s how the visit actually goes.
No surprises. That’s the whole idea.
01
Call first
Tell us what has happened. Simple repairs can often be turned around same-day if we know you are coming.
02
Assessing why
We look at the fit as well as the damage, because a break is usually a symptom of a fit problem.
03
The repair or reline
Simple repairs are often same-day. A reline generally means leaving the denture with us for a day, or a chairside version while you wait.
04
Checking it
We check the bite and the pressure points before you leave, and we would rather see you back in a week than have you endure a sore spot.
Questions
Answered before you ask.
Can you repair it today?
Often, for a clean break with all pieces present. Call before you come so we can plan for it. Complex fractures and anything needing laboratory work generally take a day or two.
Can I use a drugstore repair kit?
Please do not. They rarely hold, and the resin contaminates the fracture surface so a proper repair becomes impossible. A kit that saves you thirty dollars regularly costs a full remake.
How often do dentures need relining?
Every two to five years for most people, sooner in the first couple of years after extractions when bone changes fastest. If yours has become loose, that is the signal — not a fixed schedule.
My denture is fine, it just moves a bit. Is that normal?
It is common, but it is not something you have to accept. That is usually exactly what a reline fixes, and it is one of the more satisfying appointments we do.
