A lower denture that stays where you put it

For anyone struggling with a lower denture, this is usually the single most transformative option available.

Who this is for

  • A lower denture that moves, clicks or lifts when you eat
  • You are using adhesive daily and would rather not
  • Sore spots that keep coming back however often it is adjusted
  • You want implants but not one for every missing tooth

Why lower dentures are the hard ones

An upper denture has the palate to seal against, and suction does much of the work. A lower denture has none of that — it sits on a horseshoe ridge with a tongue underneath it and cheek muscles either side, all of which move constantly.

That is not a fitting failure. It is anatomy, and it is why so many people with a perfectly well-made lower denture still cannot eat comfortably with it. The bone also resorbs over the years once teeth are gone, so the ridge it sits on gradually flattens and the problem compounds.

Anyone who tells you a conventional lower full denture will feel like natural teeth is overselling it.

What two implants change

Two implants in the front of the lower jaw, with attachments the denture clips onto, stop it moving. That is the entire proposition, and for most people it is the difference between tolerating a denture and forgetting about it.

You can bite into things again. You stop thinking about it in restaurants. The adhesive goes in the bin. It still comes out at night for cleaning, and it is still a denture — but it behaves.

Four implants gives more stability again, and a fixed bridge on implants is the option where nothing comes out at all. Cost rises accordingly, and two is genuinely enough for a great many people.

Who does what

Worth being clear: we do not place implants surgically. That is done by an oral surgeon or periodontist we have worked with for years, and we arrange the referral.

What we do is the planning, the decision about how many implants and where, and then designing and fitting the denture that attaches to them — which is where the comfort and the bite are actually determined.

You deal with us throughout. We coordinate the surgical appointment rather than handing you a phone number, and we see you afterwards for every adjustment.

What to expect

Here’s how the visit actually goes.

No surprises. That’s the whole idea.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Imaging to check the bone, and an honest conversation about whether two implants or four suits your situation and budget.

  2. 02

    Placement

A single appointment with the surgeon. Most patients find it considerably easier than they expected.

  3. 03

    Healing

Usually three to four months for the implants to integrate. You wear your existing denture, adjusted, throughout — you are never without teeth.

  4. 04

    Fitting the attachments

We fit the clips into your denture and adjust the bite. This is where the result is made.

  5. 05

    Reviews

The clips wear and are replaced periodically — a quick, inexpensive appointment, not a remake.

Questions

Answered before you ask.

Does it still come out?

Yes — an implant-retained denture unclips for cleaning and at night. If you want something that never comes out, that is a fixed implant bridge, which costs considerably more.

How many implants do I need?

Two is enough to transform a lower denture for most people. Four gives more stability and is worth considering if you have the bone and the budget. We will give you a straight recommendation rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.

Am I too old?

Age itself is not a barrier — bone quality and general health matter far more. We have patients in their eighties with implant-retained dentures who describe it as the best dental decision they made.

What if I have been told I do not have enough bone?

Common after years without teeth. Grafting can often build the site back up, which adds months and cost. Occasionally the honest answer is that it is not feasible, and we will say so rather than start something that will not finish well.
