Immediate Dentures · San Ramon

You will not leave without teeth

Made in advance from impressions taken before the extractions, and fitted the same day, so nobody sees you without teeth.

Who this is for

  • You are facing extractions and dread going without teeth
  • You work with the public and cannot take weeks away
  • You want to know what the healing period actually involves
  • You have been putting off necessary extractions for this reason

How it works, and what it costs you

We take impressions and record your bite while your teeth are still present. The denture is made from those, so it is ready on the day.

The extractions are done by the oral surgeon we refer to, and the denture goes straight in. It also acts as a dressing over the sites, which usually reduces bleeding and swelling.

The trade-off is worth knowing up front: because it was made before the gums healed, an immediate denture will not fit as precisely as one made afterwards. It needs relining, and often a remake, once healing is complete. You are paying something extra for never being seen without teeth. For most people that is straightforwardly worth it.

The first three months

Bone and gum change fastest immediately after extractions and keep changing for months. A denture that fit on day one will feel loose by week six. That is expected, not a failure.

So we see you frequently in that period, often weekly at first, to adjust and add temporary soft liner material as the shape changes. That is included, and it is the part that makes this work.

At around three to six months, when things have stabilized, we either permanently reline the denture or make the definitive one.

The day itself, practically

Arrange a lift home and take the day off. Have soft food in and ice packs ready.

Do not take the denture out for the first 24 hours unless we tell you to. It is holding pressure on the extraction sites, and if it comes out early the gums swell and getting it back in becomes genuinely difficult.

We see you the following day to take it out, check everything, and show you how to clean it.

What to expect

Here’s how the visit actually goes.

No surprises. That’s the whole idea.

  1. 01

    Planning

Impressions, bite registration and shade selection while your teeth are still there.

  2. 02

    A try-in where possible

For a partial clearance we can often try the teeth in first. For a full clearance that is not always possible, which is why a photograph of your natural smile helps.

  3. 03

    Extraction day

The surgeon extracts, we fit the denture the same day. Do not remove it for 24 hours.

  4. 04

    Next-day review

We take it out, check the sites, and show you the cleaning routine.

  5. 05

    Frequent adjustments

Weekly at first, then monthly. Included, and the reason this works.

Questions

Answered before you ask.

Will it look right straight away?

It will look good, and it is made to a plan you approved. It will not fit as precisely as a denture made after healing. That is the trade-off for never being without teeth.

How much does it hurt?

Most of the discomfort is from the extractions rather than the denture, and it peaks around day two or three. Ibuprofen manages it well for most people.

Why can I not just wait and have one made properly?

You can, and it will fit better. It also means three to six months without teeth. Most people choose the immediate denture once they picture that clearly.

Will I need a new one later?

Usually a reline at three to six months, and sometimes a full remake. We will be clear about which we expect in your case before you start.
