What the laser actually does — and what it doesn't

A diode laser is a genuinely useful soft-tissue tool. It is also one of the most oversold things in dentistry, so here is the honest version.

Who this is for

  • You are having gum disease treatment and want to know what is involved
  • Uneven or excessive gum tissue you would like reshaped
  • You have heard about laser dentistry and want a straight answer

The honest limits, first

Our laser is a diode. It works on soft tissue — gum, mucosa, the lining of a periodontal pocket. It cannot cut enamel, dentine or bone. It does not replace the drill, it does not remove decay, and no filling has ever been placed with one.

We are saying that up front because there are practices that market laser dentistry in a way that implies drill-free treatment. That is not what this is, and you should be skeptical of anyone who suggests otherwise.

What it genuinely does, it does well.

Where it earns its place

Periodontal pockets. Alongside scaling and root planing, the laser disinfects the soft tissue lining of the pocket and reaches bacteria that instruments physically cannot. Patients typically bleed less during the appointment and are noticeably less sore that evening.

Bacterial reduction before a cleaning. A brief pass through the pockets lowers the bacterial load, adds a few minutes, and is completely painless.

Gum contouring. Reshaping uneven or excessive gum tissue with far less bleeding than a scalpel, and no sutures in most cases.

What it feels like

For bacterial reduction and pocket disinfection, most people feel nothing at all — occasionally a slight warmth. No anesthetic is needed.

For contouring, the area is numbed, and healing is generally faster and more comfortable than a conventional soft-tissue procedure because the laser seals as it works.

There is no noise and no vibration, which for a lot of anxious patients is the single most welcome thing about it.

What to expect

Here’s how the visit actually goes.

No surprises. That’s the whole idea.

  1. 01

It is usually part of something else

Most laser use here happens inside a periodontal appointment rather than as a treatment you book separately.

  2. 02

    Protective eyewear

Everyone in the room wears it. Non-negotiable and takes five seconds.

  3. 03

    The pass itself

A fine fiber traced through the pocket or along the tissue. Quiet, quick, and for most patients entirely painless.

  4. 04

    Afterwards

Nothing special for pocket work. For contouring, avoid spicy or acidic food for a few days while the tissue settles.

Questions

Answered before you ask.

Does the laser mean no drill?

No. A diode laser cannot cut tooth structure. If you need a filling, you need a drill. Any practice implying otherwise with a diode is misrepresenting it.

Is it safe?

Yes, with proper training and eye protection. The energy is absorbed by soft tissue at a very shallow depth, which is precisely why it cannot affect bone or enamel.

Does it cost extra?

Not for periodontal treatment — it is part of how we do that work. Contouring is a separate cosmetic procedure and is priced as one.

Will it whiten my teeth?

No. Some practices use a light with whitening gel, which is a different thing and its added benefit is debatable. Our laser is for soft tissue.
